The chassis is made from MDF which gives a high mass and is non-resonant. But in addition the turntable also uses magnetic feet, which decouple the main plinth from its base. The result of this combination is a merging of the influential 'mass loaded' and 'floating turntable' design principles.
Instead of the old-standard adoption of pure metal for a main platter, Pro-Ject researched and uncovered a perfect alloy material, which has then be damped on the inner side with thermo plastic elastomers (TPE). Taking this base structure, they've then glued recycled Vinyl records to the top (which act as a perfect mat) and baked this 'sandwich' before precision balancing it. The Xtension 9 subsequently benefits from a wonderfully resonance-free, heavy platter, that runs ultra-silently on an inverted ceramic ball-bearing, with magnetic suspension.
The Xtension 9 comes pre-fitted with the Pro-Ject 9cc Evolution Tonearm. Constructed from carbon-fibre, the armtube is efficiently designed to lead parasitic vibrations away from the cartridge into the mounting board which guarantees the precise tracking of the record grooves by the needle and also facilitates fine adjustment of vertical and horizontal tracing.
Usually worth £649, the Ortofon Quintet Black comes pre-fitted to the Xtension 9. Graced with a Nude Shibata diamond, the Quintet Black is considered one of the best stylus profiles available, mounted on a high-performance Boron cantilever. The Shibata’s slim, highly polished profile allows an exceedingly wide contact area to the walls of the groove and ensures detailed and pure reproduction through out the spectrum, including even the most high frequency groove details.
Finally, the Xtension 9 is also supplied with a beautiful dustcover with adjustable hinges, and is available in three high-gloss lacquer finishes.

Comments of Note:
"Pro-Ject Phono Box RS - A genuine fully balanced phono stage with endless load and gain options adjustable tone curves and exceptional sound for under a grand, the Phono Box RS is an established favourite.
“The Xtension is a clever piece of industrial design that looks every inch the asking price and takes style to new places, though it remains unmistakably Pro-Ject.”
“The Phono Box RS supports moving magnet and moving coil cartridges with multiple gain and loading settings – good, but far from unusual in terms of phono stage specification. It then goes on to add balanced inputs and outputs and the choice of standard RIAA and non-standard Decca equalisation curves. There are phono stages at 10 times the cost that can’t match that.”
“The construction is a pleasing combination of immensely solid overall build that is then finished with some lovely and extremely high quality flourishes like the elegant speaker terminals and flawless piano lacquer that complements the equally wonderful job done by Pro-Ject on the Xtension.”
Xtension 9 – “the big white Pro-Ject is an impressively neutral platform”
“the Xtension is an utterly stable, silent and exactingly competent method of digging every last shred of detail off a record.”
“If these two former upstart brands (Pro-Ject & Acoustic Energy) have made the transition to become the new establishment, the next set of challengers are going to have to be truly sensational to repeat the feat. Welcome to the new order.”

Comments of Note:
“I was pleased to hear that the Xtension 9 Evolution Super Pack exhibits that certain indefinable sonic ‘rightness’ that generally characterises the upper reaches of the Pro-Ject range for me."
"The song starts with some quiet instrumental artefacts that stretch off into the soundstage on the left hand side and the Pro-Ject captured the scale and depth of these perfectly, sweeping the action dramatically and precisely from left to right when the full band began. I was also very pleased to hear Don Henley’s vocals large, solid and locked perfectly in between my loudspeakers." (Eagles’ Long Road Out Of Eden [Universal 060251749243 1])
"At the top end, no doubt aided by the highly capable Ortofon cartridge, the Pro-Ject managed to be detailed, smooth crisp and yet mellow all in one."
"As a result, Anita Baker’s vocals on ‘Caught Up In The Rapture’ from her Rapture album [Elektra 960444-1] were beautifully clear – a very pleasant surprise given the rather average quality of this mid-’80s pressing. Equally, the drum strikes backing her were taut and well defined, helping to render the whole performance as a tightly cohesive whole. Better still was the Pro-Ject’s fine sense of image stability that painted a vivid and expertly scaled sonic picture in my listening room."
"I found the Pro-Ject to be assured and smooth at the low end with fine levels of detail, no matter whether the instrument in question was acoustic or electronic."

Comments of Note:
"Pro-Ject kicked off its Xtension line-up back in 2009 with the Xtension 12, a relatively large deck designed to take 12in tonearms. This superpack sees the company’s more rack-friendly Xtension 9 Evolution turntable pre-fitted with the latest version of its one-piece carbon fibre 9CC Evolution tonearm plus the range-topping Black moving-coil cartridge from Ortofon’s Quintet series. The result is a turntable that sounds smooth and assured, yet is certainly no slouch when it comes to digging deep into the grooves in search of detail. Add clarity, crispness and a presentation that manages to sound solid yet punchy when the occasion demands, and you have a turntable package that is nothing if not value for money."
