Free air structure creates an ultra-open sound field

The DX6000 uses a new "free air structure" that combines an open sound field and low frequencies that far exceed those of conventional open headphones. It delivers a completely new music experience, combining a natural, spacious sound reminiscent of ear speakers with delicate low frequencies that allow you to feel the gradations.

Development of an innovative dynamic driver with a foamed silicone edge

The newly designed dynamic driver unit (DU) uses a magnesium alloy with high rigidity and large internal loss as the diaphragm material. This makes it difficult for split vibration and unnecessary resonance to occur.

Furthermore, it took several years to develop the edge of this driver unit. With general edge materials, it is not possible to suppress resonance in a certain frequency band. In recent years, various shapes have been proposed for the edge of speakers to address this issue. We decided to use foamed silicone resin to solve this problem. Taking advantage of the characteristics of foamed material, which is extremely lightweight, we have given the edge thickness. By adopting a material that is extremely light, soft, and thick at the same time, we have solved the conflicting problems of ease of movement and preventing unnecessary resonance. This edge material and magnesium diaphragm are not bonded together with a general adhesive, but are molded as a single unit by pouring foamed silicone material into the mold with the magnesium diaphragm fixed inside. This fundamentally solves various problems such as individual differences caused by differences in the amount of adhesive applied between the diaphragm and the edge. In addition, a major problem that prevents the diaphragm from moving accurately is that the voice coil's lead wire is glued to the edge. This method is excellent for preventing wire breakage, and is a common method adopted in many products. However, because adhesive is applied to only a portion of the lightweight edge, the vibration system moves in a biased manner. In order to ensure accurate piston motion in the vibration system, the wires from the voice coil are not glued to the edge but are instead routed in the air, resulting in a design that does not interfere with the movement of the diaphragm. To achieve this method while also ensuring reliability and less susceptibility to breakage, final's original aluminum alloy wire is used for the voice coil.

Transient coil system for accurate response to input signals

  • Challenges of free air structure

The more open the series of ventilation such as the back of the driver unit and inside the ear pad, the inside and outside of the housing, the more open and natural the sound field feeling, but the narrower the low frequency range is. To solve this, the f0 of the driver unit, the minimum resonance frequency, must be significantly lowered. However, in general, open-type headphones have a high impedance, that is, the number of windings of the voice coil is increased, making it heavier and increasing the L of the coil to reduce the high frequency sound pressure. If a soft material is used for the edge to lower the f0 as it is, accurate piston motion will be hindered.

  • Development of a transient coil system

To solve this conflicting element, we developed a "transient coil system" that inserts a coil in series into the driver unit. This allows the vibration system (diaphragm + edge + voice coil) to be kept light, while reducing the high frequency sound pressure, and by using a flexible and easy-to-move material for the edge, a low f0 and minimum resonance frequency are achieved. By balancing these technologies, an open sound field and sufficient bass are achieved, while the lightweight vibration system achieves sharp sound rises and falls (transients).

*The "transient coil system" provides a rated impedance of 47Ω@1kHz, but at 20kHz the impedance rises to 480Ω. Therefore, we recommend using this product with a stationary amplifier with sufficient power capacity to handle high impedance, rather than a portable device.

Machined aluminum-magnesium alloy housing

The housing is made from a block of aluminum-magnesium alloy by precise cutting, providing firm support for the driver while minimizing unnecessary resonance and sound distortion.

Open-type ear pads made of special fabric using washi paper

Not only closed-type headphones, but also open-type headphones often have more or less sealed ear pads, which extends the characteristic reproduction frequency to low frequencies that the driver unit cannot reproduce. However, in order to reproduce the natural, high-quality low frequencies that the sound source possesses, the driver unit itself must be capable of reproducing low frequencies, and ear pads that are not sealed tightly and have good ventilation must be used. However, most typical dynamic headphones lack low frequencies with ear pads that are not sealed tightly.

This product has an extremely low minimum resonance frequency (f0), so the driver unit alone can reproduce low frequencies sufficiently even with ear pads that are not sealed tightly. The ear pads, which have a significant impact on sound quality, are developed in-house and use a special fabric made of washi paper that combines a dry feel and durability as the surface material, and a foam with excellent ventilation. The headband is also made of the same material, which is resistant to moisture and highly durable.
*Since the ear pads are fixed to the driver unit with special screws, they will need to be replaced at Final Audio. If you replace them yourself, they will not be covered by the product warranty.
