Utah 8 is a 3-way floorstanding loudspeaker that, like the smaller model in the line, reaches back to Indiana Line’s roots. Its substantial architecture – anchored by a 12-inch bass driver and, for the first time in the brand’s history, the DIRS (Damped Inner Reinforcement System) internal bracing – thrives in large, open rooms. The applied solutions yield refined, detailed and dynamic sound while maintaining exceptionally low distortion.
Engineered from the ground up, the Utah 8 marks a major step forward not only for the Utah series but for the entire range, introducing a host of key, in-house technologies and refinements not previously seen in Indiana Line loudspeakers. This powerful, nearly 27-kg, 3-way, retro-styled floorstanding speaker features a magnetically attached grille and is purpose-built for rooms larger than 25 m². It delivers sophisticated sound with substantial dynamic headroom – well beyond what Indiana Line loudspeakers have offered to date.
Tweeter with 3D-Guide waveguide
The high-frequency section employs a 28-mm aluminum–magnesium (Al-Mg) dome tweeter that provides crystalline, finely detailed treble with wide dispersion. Its superb performance stems from a neodymium drive with a copper shorting ring and a hybrid damping chamber comprising a classic axial chamber plus a Radial Venting Chamber. To further optimize sound quality, the driver sits in a purpose-designed 3D-Guide waveguide working in concert with the EQ-Ring phase corrector and an LC-Trap in the crossover network to suppress resonances.
Midrange driver with UHVC
Midband duties are handled by a proprietary 7-inch driver featuring a Curv (woven polypropylene) diaphragm, second-generation Dual-Wave suspension and a cast-aluminum chassis. Housed in its own sub-chamber to avoid resonance, it uses a special UHVC (Underhung Voice Coil) drive with a large ferrite magnet and a gap stabilized by a copper shorting ring positioned close to the voice coil. Venting ports in the former assist cooling. The result is clean, dynamic and highly precise mids that stand out versus conventional designs.
Woofer with Tri-Wave suspension
Low frequencies are reproduced by a 12-inch woofer – the largest in the brand’s history – combining a newly developed Tri-Wave suspension with a carefully profiled polypropylene diaphragm. It can generate higher bass sound-pressure levels than two Basso 880 subwoofers, delivering powerful, tightly controlled impact without audible distortion or compression. Contributing factors include a sophisticated drive with dual ferrite magnets and a four-layer copper voice coil wound with heavy-gauge wire. The Tri-Wave suspension eliminates intermodulation distortion and permits twice the cone excursion of standard solutions, keeping the bass precise and dynamic even at high SPLs.
A meticulously engineered crossover
Signal division is handled by a three-way crossover employing air-core inductors and low-loss polypropylene capacitors renowned for transparent treble reproduction. The network supports bi-wiring/bi-amping. In the HF path, an LC-Trap works alongside the EQ-Ring and 3D-Guide to eradicate any dome-resonance artefacts. A separately tuned LC-Trap is also deployed in the woofer filter to remove out-of-band diaphragm resonances and their associated distortion.
Internal reinforcement system
For the first time in an Indiana Line loudspeaker, a damped internal reinforcement system – DIRS (Damped Inner Reinforcement System) – is employed. Its core mission is to quell vibrations generated by the bass and midrange drivers. Instead of allowing energy to migrate into the enclosure, DIRS absorbs it at the source using special elastomer pads and a multi-plane internal bracing lattice. The cabinet remains inert, avoiding unwanted coloration. Expect exceptionally articulate bass, a clear midrange and a wide, lifelike soundstage. DIRS also optimizes bass-reflex performance, improving overall system efficiency.
Twin bass-reflex and three operating modes
The Utah 8’s prodigious low-frequency capability also owes much to a carefully tuned bass-reflex system with two down-firing ports in the base (each 75 mm in diameter). This exploits floor coupling to reinforce bass energy. Working with the 12-inch woofer in a generous 66-litre enclosure, the system operates free from audible turbulence or compression. The cabinet sits securely on four rubber-damped feet that mechanically decouple it from the floor and allow the reflex alignment to function efficiently at a 30 Hz tuning frequency. Using the supplied port plugs, one or both ports can be blocked to lower the tuning further – providing three distinct operating modes.
Versatile by design
With 93 dB sensitivity and a well-behaved impedance profile, Utah 8 partners easily with a wide variety of amplifiers. It’s an ideal choice for both classic and contemporary large spaces. Its carefully judged voicing delivers spaciousness and versatility – the very qualities that have defined recent generations of the Diva and Tesi series. Thanks to its substantial dynamic capability, Utah 8 handles an exceptionally broad range of musical genres with ease, appealing both to seasoned enthusiasts and to listeners taking their first steps into high-quality sound.
3D-Guide
Waveguide. A structural element of the tweeter that harnesses the strengths of the metal dome housed within it. “3D” refers not only to the waveguide’s distinctive three-dimensional geometry, but also to a three-stage engineering philosophy for metal tweeters: the waveguide itself, the EQ-Ring phase corrector, and an LC-Trap within the crossover network. Together they purge the typical shortcomings historically associated with this class of electroacoustic transducer while exploiting its core virtues – remarkably low distortion, exceptionally wide dispersion, and an extended operating window in both frequency and amplitude.
