Cayin ID6 High-Resolution Streamer, DAC, Valve Preamplifier & Headphone Amplifier

Serious Streaming. Serious Headphones. Valves – Even Through Your Hi-Fi System.

The Cayin ID6 is one of the most interesting digital products Cayin has produced.

At first glance, it's a sophisticated high-resolution network streamer, DAC, preamplifier and headphone amplifier.

Look a little deeper and things become considerably more interesting.

Inside the ID6 are genuine hand matched 12AU7 vacuum valves, giving you a choice of Classic Tube, Modern Tube or Solid-State presentation.

And here's the really important part:

The valve stage isn't restricted to the headphone outputs.

When Classic Tube or Modern Tube timbre is selected, the 12AU7 valve stage is also active through the rear RCA and XLR analogue outputs – in both LINE OUT and PRE OUT operation.

That completely changes how we should look at the ID6.

It means you can enjoy genuine valve flavour through headphones, but you can also feed that same valve-treated analogue signal into your integrated amplifier, power amplifier or active loudspeakers.

In other words:

It's not simply a streamer with valves inside.

It's a high-resolution streamer/DAC with a genuine selectable valve analogue output stages.

Qobuz, TIDAL, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music & Deezer

Streaming is every bit as important to the ID6 as its analogue architecture.

The ID6 has support for:

  • Qobuz
  • TIDAL
  • Spotify
  • Apple Music
  • Amazon Music
  • Deezer

along with:

  • AirPlay / AirPlay 2
  • DLNA / UPnP

That gives the ID6 access to an enormous amount of music without tying you to one particular ecosystem.

If you're a Qobuz user today and move to TIDAL later, your streamer doesn't have to change.

If the rest of the household uses Spotify, it's accommodated.

If you're heavily invested in Apple Music or Amazon Music, they're catered for too.

And your own ripped CDs and high-resolution downloads can sit alongside those streaming services through network or local storage playback.

System-Wide Bit-Perfect Audio

Lots of Android-based products can install streaming applications.

That doesn't automatically make them high-end streamers.

Cayin has implemented a system-wide bit-perfect audio architecture, allowing compatible third-party applications to bypass conventional Android sample-rate conversion.

That's important.

If you're listening to a 44.1kHz recording, you don't want the operating system unnecessarily converting it.

And when you move to a high-resolution recording, you want the digital architecture to preserve that information on its journey towards the DAC.

The ID6 is therefore designed around Hi-Fi streaming, rather than simply running streaming apps.

Dual ESS ES9082Q DAC Architecture

At the heart of the digital conversion stage are two ESS ES9082Q DACs, configured in MONO operation.

Using dedicated DAC architecture for the left and right channels gives Cayin greater scope to optimise separation and analogue performance.

An XMOS XU316 USB interface supports extremely high-resolution digital audio, including:

PCM up to 32-bit / 768kHz

and

Native DSD512

So beneath the touchscreen, streaming applications and network functionality sits a genuinely serious high-resolution digital platform.

HAND MATCHED 12AU7 VALVES

And this is where the ID6 separates itself from the crowd.

Cayin has installed genuine hand matched 12AU7 dual-triode vacuum valves within the analogue architecture.

They're part of the signal path on ALL outputs.

Cayin then gives you three different ways of listening:

Classic Tube

A richer, warmer and more traditionally valve-like presentation, with greater tonal density and a beautifully organic character.

Modern Tube

Still using the 12AU7 valve stage, but tuned towards a faster, more open and contemporary presentation.

Solid-State

For listeners wanting maximum neutrality, speed, precision and transparency.

So rather than buying a DAC and being permanently committed to its particular analogue character, the ID6 lets you choose.

And The Valves Work Through the Rear Outputs

This is a crucial feature of the ID6 and one we specifically asked Cayin to clarify.

Cayin has confirmed:

blockquote>

When Classic Tube or Modern Tube timbre is selected on the ID6, the 12AU7 tube stage applies to all analogue outputs, not only the headphone outputs.

That includes:

Headphone Outputs

RCA LINE OUT

XLR LINE OUT

RCA PRE OUT

XLR PRE OUT

Once the appropriate 12AU7 operating mode is selected, the valve stage applies across the analogue output architecture.

This opens up some fascinating system possibilities.

Turn Your Existing Amplifier into a Valve-Fronted Streaming System

Imagine you already own an excellent solid-state integrated amplifier.

Connect:

Cayin ID6 → XLR/RCA → Integrated Amplifier

Select:

Classic Tube

and the analogue signal leaving the ID6 has passed through its 12AU7 valve stage.

Fancy something a little quicker and more transparent?

Choose:

Modern Tube

Or want to hear the ID6 without the valve presentation?

Select:

Solid-State.

You can therefore change the analogue character of your entire streaming source without changing a single cable or component.

That's a genuinely useful feature rather than a gimmick.

A Valve Streaming Preamplifier

The preamplifier functionality makes things even more interesting.

Connect:

Cayin ID6 → Power Amplifier → Loudspeakers

and the ID6 can handle:

Streaming

Digital Conversion

Volume Control

Preamplification

Selectable Valve/Solid-State Timbre

all within one chassis.

Choose Classic Tube or Modern Tube and your power amplifier receives the signal through the ID6's 12AU7 valve stage.

That makes the ID6 capable of forming the heart of an extraordinarily simple high-end system.

Perfect with Active Loudspeakers

Exactly the same principle applies to active loudspeakers.

Connect:

ID6 → Active Loudspeakers

and you've potentially eliminated the need for a separate:

streamer,

DAC,

preamplifier,

and valve buffer.

The ID6 handles the lot.

And you still retain the ability to choose between Classic Tube, Modern Tube and Solid-State presentation.

A Serious Headphone Amplifier

Then there's the headphone section.

This isn't simply a convenience headphone socket attached to the DAC.

The ID6 employs a:

Four-channel

Fully balanced

Fully discrete

headphone amplifier architecture with selectable Class A and Class AB operation.

And there's substantial power available.

Through its balanced headphone output, the ID6 can deliver up to:

4.0W + 4.0W into 16Ω

and

2.6W + 2.6W into 32Ω

while the single-ended headphone output provides up to:

1.6W + 1.6W into 16Ω

and

0.9W + 0.9W into 32Ω.

That's proper headphone-amplifier territory.

Valve Headphone Listening Without Sacrificing Power

This is another clever aspect of Cayin's design.

Select Classic Tube or Modern Tube and you can introduce the 12AU7 valve stage while retaining the substantial driving capability of the headphone amplifier.

That gives you the ability to experiment with different combinations.

For example:

Planar Headphones + Solid-State + Class A

or:

Dynamic Headphones + Classic Tube + Class A

or:

Planar Headphones + Modern Tube + Class AB

There's enormous scope to tailor the ID6 to different headphones, recordings and personal tastes.

Qobuz Straight into Your Headphones

For headphone listeners, the ID6 can make an entire system remarkably simple.

Qobuz → ID6 → Headphones

That's it.

Or:

TIDAL → ID6 → Headphones

No separate streamer.

No separate DAC.

No separate headphone amplifier.

No analogue interconnects between boxes.

And if you fancy a valve presentation:

Qobuz → ID6 → 12AU7 Valve Stage → Headphones

For a high-end desktop, home-office, bedside or dedicated headphone system, that's extremely attractive.

One ID6 – Two Complete Hi-Fi Systems

This is perhaps our favourite aspect of the ID6.

During the day:

Qobuz → ID6 → Valve or Solid-State Output → Amplifier → Loudspeakers

Late at night:

Qobuz → ID6 → Valve or Solid-State Output → Headphones

Same music library.

Same streaming accounts.

Same DAC.

Same control interface.

Same choice of valve or solid-state sound.

One component can therefore become the digital centre of both your loudspeaker and headphone systems.

Internal Music Storage

Streaming isn't your only option.

The ID6 provides an M.2 NVMe 2280 SSD slot, allowing a substantial local music collection to be incorporated directly into the player.

The ID6 can support up to 2TB, allowing over 6000 Cd quality bit perfect FLAC albums to be stored !

That's ideal for:

Ripped CDs

High-resolution downloads

DSD recordings

Rare recordings unavailable on streaming platforms

Your locally stored collection can therefore sit alongside Qobuz, TIDAL and your other streaming services.

6-Inch Full HD+ Touchscreen

The ID6 features a large 6-inch Full HD+ touchscreen, giving you direct access to the player without constantly reaching for your phone.

Album artwork and playback information can be displayed clearly, while the ID6 also offers visual displays including spectrum and VU-meter presentations.

For desktop headphone listening in particular, this helps make the ID6 feel like a proper standalone music player rather than a black box completely dependent on an app.

Cayin Control App

When you're sitting across the room, however, there's no need to keep walking back to the ID6.

Cayin's dedicated Cayin Control App allows compatible smartphones and tablets to remotely control the player.

Put the headphones on.

Sit down.

Choose an album.

And listen.

Comprehensive Digital Connectivity

The ID6 is equally capable of becoming the digital hub of a larger system.

Connectivity includes:

USB DAC input

HDMI ARC

Coaxial digital input/output

Optical digital input/output

HDMI I²S-LVDS digital output

USB 3.0 OTG

Dual USB Host

Ethernet

Wi-Fi

Bluetooth

Balanced XLR analogue output

and

RCA analogue output.

So the ID6 isn't restricted to streaming.

Connect a television through HDMI ARC.

Use an external USB source.

Feed an external DAC.

Connect storage.

Or simply use the ID6 as the central digital control point for the entire system.

The Audio Emotion Verdict

The more we learn about the Cayin ID6, the more interesting it becomes.

As a streamer alone, there's plenty to like.

You've got Qobuz, TIDAL, Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music and Deezer, alongside AirPlay/AirPlay 2 and network music playback.

There's a powerful Android platform, system-wide bit-perfect audio architecture, dual ESS DACs, PCM 768kHz, native DSD512, internal SSD capability and extensive digital connectivity.

Then there's the headphone amplifier.

And we're not talking about a token headphone socket.

It's a four-channel, fully balanced, fully discrete design, capable of delivering up to 4 watts per channel.

But it's the 12AU7 valve implementation that really changes the proposition.

We originally wondered whether Cayin had incorporated the valves specifically for headphone listening.

They haven't.

Cayin has confirmed directly to us that Classic Tube and Modern Tube operate through all analogue outputs – including the rear RCA and XLR LINE OUT and PRE OUT.

That's a big deal.

It means you can connect the ID6 to a conventional integrated amplifier and enjoy the valve output stage.

You can connect it directly to a power amplifier and effectively create a high-resolution valve streaming preamplifier.

You can feed active loudspeakers from it.

And when everyone else goes to bed, plug your headphones in and enjoy exactly the same choice of Classic Tube, Modern Tube or Solid-State sound.

We particularly like that these aren't simply DSP presets pretending to be different amplifiers.

There are real 12AU7 valves inside the ID6.

That's the Cayin touch.

Take the convenience of a thoroughly modern network streamer.

Add a sophisticated high-resolution DAC.

Add a powerful balanced headphone amplifier.

Add preamplifier functionality.

Then put real valves in the analogue signal path and allow the owner to decide when they want to use them.

That's what makes the ID6 different.

Modern streaming convenience with a little old-school valve magic.

And we're rather fond of that combination.
