Luxman L-507Z vs L-509Z

The L-507Z offers a remarkably complete high-end amplification package, while the flagship L-509Z takes Luxman's engineering philosophy further with a more ambitious preamplifier design, sophisticated volume control and additional refinement throughout its construction.

The question isn't simply which amplifier is better equipped. It's whether those differences matter enough in your particular listening environment to justify the additional investment.

Choosing between these amplifiers requires more than comparing specifications.

Both models share Luxman's modern LIFES amplification technology and its commitment to natural, engaging musical reproduction. However, their internal architectures differ in important ways.

The real questions concern how confidently an amplifier controls your loudspeakers, how convincingly it reproduces musical dynamics, and whether the additional sophistication of the flagship offers an audible benefit within your system.

For this comparison, the most useful approach is to consider the complete listening experience rather than focusing on headline power figures alone.

Luxman L-507Z vs L-509Z Review | Which Should You Buy?

The Luxman L-507Z is an exceptional integrated amplifier in its own right, but for many audiophiles building a reference-level system, a persistent question remains: Should I stretch my budget for the flagship L-509Z?

Priced at £3,000 more than its smaller sibling, the L-509Z commands a premium. But Luxman hasn't simply added a bigger badge and a higher price tag. They have completely overhauled the power delivery, the output stages, and the physical architecture of the amplifier.

In our latest Kronos AV review, we put these two heavyweights side-by-side to find out if the flagship model truly justifies the investment.

Where Does the Extra Power Go?

On paper, the difference between the L-507Z's 110 watts and the L-509Z's 120 watts per channel might seem marginal. However, in high-end audio, how that power is generated matters far more than the final number.

The L-509Z utilizes significantly larger transformers and a robust four-parallel push-pull configuration, compared to the three-parallel design found in the 507Z. This means the flagship amplifier doesn't have to work as hard to produce the exact same volume. The result is a dramatic increase in naturalism and dynamic headroom. When your amplifier is operating effortlessly, your loudspeakers are finally given the foundation they need to truly come on song.

Beyond the speaker taps, Luxman has also integrated a much more powerful headphone amplifier and a highly precise volume mechanism, giving you total, refined control over both your room and your private listening sessions.

Does £3,000 Buy Better Sound?

In our listening tests, the answer is a resounding yes. Because of those larger transformers and the upgraded power supply, the L-509Z delivers a richer, more authoritative dynamic response.

The bass notes hit with more weight and control. Crucially, when the lower frequencies are anchored so effortlessly, it clears the path for the mids and highs to open up. You will notice a much richer, more defined three-dimensionality to the soundstage. Instruments are placed with pinpoint accuracy, and vocals step forward with a breathtaking sense of realism that the 507Z, as brilliant as it is, just slightly misses.

Which Amplifier Should You Buy?

Choosing between these two incredible amplifiers comes down to your current system and your future ambitions.

If power is a non-issue, your current speakers are very easy to drive, and you don't do much critical headphone listening, the L-507Z is more than adequate. It is a stunning amplifier that allows you to allocate that £3,000 elsewhere in your system.

However, if you want pure peace of mind, the L-509Z is the definitive choice. It is a true "end-game" amplifier. It ensures that no matter what notoriously difficult-to-drive speakers you decide to upgrade to in the future, you will have the pure, uncompromised power required to drive them perfectly. It is the best of the best that Luxman has to offer.
