The Cayin ID6 is one of the most interesting digital products Cayin has produced.

At first glance, it's a sophisticated high-resolution network streamer, DAC, preamplifier and headphone amplifier.

Inside the ID6 are genuine hand matched 12AU7 vacuum valves, giving you a choice of Classic Tube, Modern Tube or Solid-State presentation.

And here's the really important part:

The valve stage isn't restricted to the headphone outputs.

When Classic Tube or Modern Tube timbre is selected, the 12AU7 valve stage is also active through the rear RCA and XLR analogue outputs – in both LINE OUT and PRE OUT operation.

It means you can enjoy genuine valve flavour through headphones, but you can also feed that same valve-treated analogue signal into your integrated amplifier, power amplifier or active loudspeakers.

System-Wide Bit-Perfect Audio

Lots of Android-based products can install streaming applications.

That doesn't automatically make them high-end streamers.

Cayin has implemented a system-wide bit-perfect audio architecture, allowing compatible third-party applications to bypass conventional Android sample-rate conversion.

That's important.

If you're listening to a 44.1kHz recording, you don't want the operating system unnecessarily converting it.

And when you move to a high-resolution recording, you want the digital architecture to preserve that information on its journey towards the DAC.

The ID6 is therefore designed around Hi-Fi streaming, rather than simply running streaming apps.

Dual ESS ES9082Q DAC Architecture

At the heart of the digital conversion stage are two ESS ES9082Q DACs, configured in MONO operation.

Using dedicated DAC architecture for the left and right channels gives Cayin greater scope to optimise separation and analogue performance.

An XMOS XU316 USB interface supports extremely high-resolution digital audio, including:

PCM up to 32-bit / 768kHz

and

Native DSD512

So beneath the touchscreen, streaming applications and network functionality sits a genuinely serious high-resolution digital platform.

Cayin has installed genuine hand matched 12AU7 dual-triode vacuum valves within the analogue architecture.

They're part of the signal path on ALL outputs.

Modern Tube

And we're not talking about a token headphone socket.

It's a four-channel, fully balanced, fully discrete design, capable of delivering up to 4 watts per channel.

But it's the 12AU7 valve implementation that really changes the proposition.

We originally wondered whether Cayin had incorporated the valves specifically for headphone listening.

They haven't.

Cayin has confirmed directly to us that Classic Tube and Modern Tube operate through all analogue outputs – including the rear RCA and XLR LINE OUT and PRE OUT.

That's a big deal.

It means you can connect the ID6 to a conventional integrated amplifier and enjoy the valve output stage.

You can connect it directly to a power amplifier and effectively create a high-resolution valve streaming preamplifier.
