The original Pro-Ject Debut was released in the late 1990’s during a time when CD was king, and the vinyl format was presumed to be all but gone. But nearly two decades (and a few incarnations) later the model still stands, and it deserves a key accreditation in the ongoing success of a rejuvenated vinyl and budget turntable market. The Debut symbolises all that is good about vinyl; it is beautiful to behold and fantastic to listen to, with the right mixture of user-friendliness and opportunity to tweak and upgrade.
Introduced at the beginning of 2012, the Debut Carbon expanded on the Debut III in a variety of ways, but most notably with its one-piece 8.6" carbon fibre tonearm. Using a carbon fibre tonearm at this price is almost unheard of, and allows the newest Debut to outperform all of its competitiors. The stiff yet lightweight tonearm provides the perfect properties for the pre-installed Ortofon 2M Red cartridge to sing at its fullest potential.
In addition to the improved tonearm, the full-size 12" main platter offers better performance than any other previous Debut model. The platter is driven by a high-quality motor that is now mounted onto a new Thermo-Plastic Elastomer (TPE) "blob" set. This rubber composition dramatically reduces resonance transference from the motor, further improving the turntable's sound quality.
Since 2014, the Debut Carbon has been upgraded to the Debut Carbon DC. The DC model benefits from a new, upgraded power supply that powers an ultra-precise, DC-driven AC motor generator for superlative speed stability. This added tweak further elevates the Debut Carbon to comfortably the best Debut model ever.
The Debut Carbon DC is an affordable hi-fi turntable that is even comfortable in far more expensive hi-fi systems. This, combined with the wide variety of finish options, means more people than ever are experiencing Pro-Ject's most famous turntable.

What Hi-Fi?, October 2014
“There’s a pleasing level of clarity. It’s a clean, insightful sound that digs deep to reveal all manner of texture and nuance in the mournful guitar fiddling.”

Absolute Sound, November 2012

Comments of Note:
“As an entry-level design the Debut Carbon nails the basics: dynamic shading and speed constancy. The essentials of what we call “rhythm and pace” are impressive. Without this foundation a turntable is going to fail at its most important job—drawing us into the music.”
“Queuing up Glenn Gould’s recording of Bach’s Partita No. 1 in B-Flat Major [Columbia] I immediately heard a very nice sense of interplay between Gould’s overlapping hands and interspersed digits as he dances his way through this remarkable piece.”
“The soundstage was likewise good with more than a decent sense of air and space, and good instrumental focus.”
“Rock—from Jack White’s Blunderbuss [Third Man] to Nick Cave and Co.’s Grinderman 2 [Anti] to the Stones’ Sticky Fingers [RS Records]—showed that the Debut Carbon can also deliver the punch, textures, and gritty edge required to bring home the goods.”
“Whether for first-time turntable buyers or anyone wishing to enjoy high-quality LP playback without spending a lot of money, Pro-Ject’s Debut Carbon is a great way to go.”
Hi-Fi Pig, October 2012
Comments of Note:
"Often on cheaper turntables, speed stability cannot be taken for granted. But the Debut Carbon is fine. Very impressive."
"It does sound good, is easy to set up and use, and it looks great, in a minimalist and optionally colourful sort of way. Music is well resolved and enjoyably involving. To be honest, for £300 you really can't go wrong here."

Comments of Note:
"On the Carbon the grooving synth-bass line sounds extremely precise"
"Pro-jects Debut Carbon gave a clean and vibrant sound quality reminiscent of more expensive turntables"
"The Carbon definitely sounds livelier and more coherent than its rivals"
What Hi-Fi?, September 2012
"The Debut delivers an impressively clean and insightful sound, one that digs deep while keeping a firm hold of the overall music structure. It's not just clinical reproduction though - we're taken with the Pro-Ject's expressive nature, too."

Hi-Fi Choice, August 2012

|Score:||4.5/5 Stars, Recommended|
Comments of Note:
"In use, the carbon tonearm was a joy due to its most fine ergonomic and aesthetic design..."
"the Debut Carbon is however, very well finished in all aspects..."
"Along with its slick operating carbon-fibre tonearm then, it offers a lot of value for a budget-priced turntable."
"In action, the Debut Carbon really surprised with its ability to reproduce the tone of voice and instruments in all the music I used."
"Yet the Pro-Ject skilfully avoids any of the many traps set by the LP format; budget decks can often sound speed-unstable or edgy and the Debut does not."
"For the money, it's an essential audition."

Comments of Note:
"With Pro-Ject's usual clear and sensible instructions, and no cartridge fitting to worry about, even complete newcomers should find this turntable easy to install and set up. It is nice to use, too..."
"With 'Fast Car' [from Tracy Chapman, 1988, Elektra 960 774-1], again the Pro-Ject's strength was in its projection of the vocal. The singer was intelligible, emotive and with a strong sense of presence, yet still with a fair rendition of the studio-created 'air' around her."
"I felt that the Debut Carbon was quite appealingly communicative and made for an absorbing listen."
"With its full-size platter and smart-looking arm, the Debut in Carbon form does offer an uplift in performance in return for a modest price increase, and certainly gets quite striking results from the gutsy-sounding Ortofon 2m Red cartridge."
