Tribute to Franco Serblin.
"In the wake of what was our first adventure, the integrated Sonus Faber Quid, I dedicate this series to Franco in vivid memory and with the indelible affection that I keep for him who was a mentor to me, a second father." Fabio Serblin.
The Frankie Plus features the exact same specifications as the Frankie, however includes built in streaming module, an USB OTG port ( to playback from
a memory stick or hard drive ) and two digital S/PDIF inputs while keeping the
same phono board of the original Frankie.
Frankie's amplification module uses an original bipolar transistor circuitry developed and developed in our home.
The circuit, in mixed SMD / TH technology, is built on the heat sink to maximize thermal efficiency and minimize signal paths containing parasitic inductances to the benefit of performance.
The compact module thus obtained is equipped with gold-plated connectors which allow it to be easily separated from the motherboard with a view to future updates or alternative arrangements.
The power supply is entrusted to a generous toroidal transformer equipped with 3 separate secondary windings to serve the various sections of the circuit without causing interference between them.
We paid extreme attention to the realization of the transformer to make it absolutely silent.
The choice of class II insulation, therefore without earthing, also makes it easier to insert Frankie into the audio chain by avoiding ground loops that sometimes afflict class I appliances.
Downstream of the transformer we have voltage regulators at discrete components with better performance than common commercial regulators in terms of noise and transient response.
The delicate function of the volume control is entrusted to a passive network, a bank of fixed resistances switched by relay with a 127-step scale.
This solution offers superior audio quality to both analog and digital potentiometers.
A perfect tracing between the channels throughout the attenuation arc and the consistency of the performance in the long term is also guaranteed.
The PHONO preamplifier accepts MM and MC heads and offers a wide range of adjustments for the perfect adaptation of any model.
The MC input has a stage dedicated to discrete components.
The final power stage is protected by short circuit and overload by a precise and fast optical sensor which has no impact on the audio but intervenes, if necessary, only by disconnecting the load until the normal operating conditions are restored.
